Pharmacological Actions :
Mentothicone Soft Gelatin Capsules contains two
active ingredients: Simethicone and Peppermint Oil.
Simethicone is a mixture 01 liquid dimethicones containing finely divided silicon dioxide to enhance the deloarning properties of the silicone. It lowers surface tension of gas bubbles and when administered by mouth causes bubbles of gas in the gastrointestinal tract to coalesce, thus aiding their dispersion. Simethicone is used for the relief of flatulence and abdominal discomfort due to excess gastrointestinal gas in disorders such as dyspepsa and gastro-oesophageal reflux diseases
Simethicone is also used as a defoaming agent in radiography or endoscopy of the gastrointestinal tract. Peppermint Oil is an aromatic carminative that relaxesga1itrointestinal smooth
muscle and relieves flatulence and colic and it is used also for the relief of symptoms of the irritable bowel syndrome or gastrointeslinal spasm secondary to other disorders.
Pharmacokinetics :
Elimination of Simethicone is fecal as unchanged drug.
Indications :
– Relief of the painful symptoms of excess gas in the digestive tract.
– Relief of flatulence and spasm.
– Irritable colon syndrome and enterocolitis.
– Intestinal colic.
– Gastrointestinal disturbances.
Dosage & Administration :
One capsule three times daily or as directed by the physician.
Contraindicatlons :
None.
Side Effects :
Peppermint Oil can be irritant and may rarely cause hypersens~ivity reactions. Reported reactions include erythematous skin rash,
headache, bradycardia, muscle tremor, and ataxia. Heartburn has also been reported.
Drug Interactions :
Peppermint Oil can inhibit the cytochrome P450 isoenzyme CYP3A4, and may affect the clearance of drugs whose metabolism is mediated by this enzyme.
Pregnancy & Lactation :
The safety of the use of drug in pregnancy and lactation is not established.
Precautions & Warnings :
Enteric coated capsules containing peppermint oil should not be taken immediately after food or w~ antacids.
Packing :
Carton box containing 1, 2, or 3 ( AI. , transparent PVC) blisters each of 12 soft gelatin capsules and inner leaflet.
Storage :
Store at temperature not exceeding 30′ C in a dry place.
Keep out of the reach of children.
